Greystoke - Cumbria

Greystoke , England

URPoint Details

A village with a medieval church and a Victorian castle incorporating an earlier castle that had been re-fortified in 1353 by the 2n Baron Greystoke.

In the late 18th century the 11th Duke of Norfolk built three unusual farms near here: Fort Putnam and Bunkers Hill are built like forts and Spire House resembles a church.

There are two cairns Blencow Bank and Leadon Howe, are Bronze Age burial sites.

To the southwest is the delightful 17th century Greenthwaite Hall.

To the north is Johnby Hall, and to the northeast is Blencowe both being old houses.

The Church of St Andrew is a large mostly 15th century building, with a west tower. The interior is interesting with misericords, brasses and alabaster effigies.
