URPoint Details
The only place in the world where you could run away to get married and no questions asked. Today Gretna still marries people, but you have to put your request in very early. The original Blacksmith’s anvil is there, where runaways pledged their love.
The bridge over the River Sark is the actual border between England and Scotland where a little to the southwest the river flows into the Solway Firth, noted for its dangerous tides which occasionally form a ‘bore’ up to 4ft in height.
Northeast is the site of the Battle of Solway Moss, where in 1542 the Scots were defeated.
To the south near the Solway Firth shore is the Lochmaben Stone standing 7ft high and weighing 10 tons probably being part of an original stone circle.
The stone has been used as a meeting place and in 1398 was the place where a truce was called between Scotland and England.
