Greenham

Greenham , England

URPoint Details

Adjoining the South-east side of Newbury, Greenham is an extensive residential parish, includes the Newbury and Crookham golf course and, down by the Kennet, the site of the mill where the wool was prepared for the famous 'Newbury Coat'.

The parish church, although on an older site, dates only from 1876. The painting that adorns much of the interior was added in 1888. The tree of Jesse stained glass, although its setting gives it a modern appearance, in fact dates from 1618. Not far away is Greenham Lodge which is a fine example of the architecture of Norman Shaw. It dates from 1875 and was the home of Lloyd H. Baxendale who, with John Porter of Kingsclere, founded the Newbury racecourse.

The Southern part of Greenham parish is taken up by the Greenham Common air base. Here too, is Sandleford Priory (now St Gabriel's school) which was originally founded in the 13th century for Augustinian Canons. It was abandoned before the Reformation and in the l8th century the building was redesigned and enlarged by Sir James Wyatt for Mrs Elizabeth Montagu. The school, however, still retains the unique medieval roof of the chapel and has recently restored the beautiful octagonal drawing
