URPoint Details
The village is one of several in the green and pleasant marsh-lands of the southeast of the county and has been here since prehistoric times and was once an important small town or large fort during Roman occupation.
The name is thought to have originated during the Saxon period from the name of the owner, Walchel or Walcher, and the word ˜ing' means meadow or pasture.
