Church Lane, Great Bircham PE31 6XS, England
URPoint Details
St Mary’s Church is surrounded by giant elms and both new and old churchyards.
The church is mainly 15th century and has a beautiful 13th century doorway approached by a fine north porch. Inside, the loft nave forms a striking feature having stone seats around the bases of the slender shafted pillars. A 15th century screen leads to the chancel, which was restored in the late 1800s and where 10 oak carvings of men and women support the roof. There is a 300 year old altar table, but the doorway to the tower is even older.
