Great Bircham

Great Bircham , England

URPoint Details

Bircham on the fringe of the Sandringham estates consists of three parts: Great Bircham, Bircham Newton and Bircham Tofts.
One approaches Bircham vis Bircham Heath, where there are four barrows, these have been excavated and found to contain funerary urns, gold pins, a bronze pin, skulls etc ascribed to the Bronze Age.

Bircham Newton is an area of conservation situated on the road between Great Bircham and Docking. There are some wonderful views from around here and there facilities for private trout fishing. All Saints’ church is one of the smallest in the county and is a place of dignity and charm it was mostly built in the 13th century and it is noticeable that there are no windows on the north side – an advantage in the cold weather. The old pews have lights or candle holders which are still used when the occasional services are held.

At the Tofts end of Bircham there is an ivy covered, ruined church. There is an air of mystery about this bird-haunted place which is attractive to artists and pets alike.
