Great Bedwyn

Great Bedwyn , England

URPoint Details

Seven generations of stonemasons have lived and worked in the village and some of their fine work can be seen in the local museum.

Both the Kennet and Avon Canal and an old Roman road cross the village which sits at the edge of Savernake Forest. The great avenue of beech trees starts almost at Marlborough and leads to Tottenham House, just south of the village.

Tottenham is a splendid mansion in the Corinthian style and was the home of the Marquess of Ailsbury.

The church is an old square and flint building with a 14th century tower, and 13th century chancel. The arcades in the nave are richly carved and date back to Norman times. Among the monuments is one to Sir John Seymour the father of Jane Seymour.
