Sir Charles Bunbury lived at Barton Hall and in the 18th century introduced horses to the area. When in 1870 Sir Charles tossed a coin with Lord Derby in a London club to decide the name of a new horse race, he unfortunately lost the toss, but did have the first two winners of the Derby Stakes.
