URPoint Details

The 14th century church of St Mary the Virgin is famous for it's stone rood screen, wonderful windows and a brass dated 1584 to William Bendlowes.

Place House, a lovely Tudor building owned by William Bendlowes who was Sergeant-at-Law to Queen Elizabeth I. Rumour has it that Elizabeth took refuge there when escaping from her sister Mary Tudor. Bendlowes left much of his wealth to the village and many people still benefit from his charity today. A Latin prayer book was found dated 1665 tucked in a beam when repairs were being carried out.

The old stone bridge over the River Pant has provided inspiration for many artists.

The green in the centre of this attractive village is surrounded by colour washed and pargetted houses, beautiful medieval and Georgian houses, the Town Hall built 1859 and the Friends Meeting House dated 1804.
