Great Ashfield , England

URPoint Details

A lovely small friendly and unspoilt village with a cluster of houses and two pubs.

The 13th century All Saints Church stands on an earlier site recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. King Edmund killed by the Danes is supposedly to have been buried here in AD 903 and a Saxon Cross made from Barnack stone was erected to commemorate the event. The cross, replaced in the 19th century now stands in Ashfield House garden.
In the churchyard is a memorial to the Americans who died during the war and inside the church is a parchment roll recording their names.
