Thomas Gray, was born 26 December 1716, the only child of 12 children of Philip and Dorothy Gray to survive infancy. He was an English poet, letter-writer, classical scholar and professor at Cambridge University.
Gray died on 30 July 1771 in Cambridge, and was buried beside his mother in the churchyard of Stoke Poges, in Buckinghamshire, the setting for his famous Elegy.
