Goudhurst

Goudhurst , England

URPoint Details

Between the duck pond and the church there are some fine Kentish houses in the main street.

There are fine views of the countryside of orchards and hopfields, especially over the Weald to the north.

Goudhurst stands on a steep ridge of land and its church tower is 500ft above sea level.

The church is 14th century but the stocky tower was added in 1638 when a storm destroyed the original and covers many periods including Gothic and Renaissance. The table tomb inside the church beneath a beautiful oriel window, with life size painted wooden figures of Sir Alexander Culpepper, who died in 1537.
The Culpeppers were among the most powerful landowners in Kentish history and this tomb is one of the finest of their many memorials in the county.
