Once a fishing village and close to Portsmouth harbour, the Spithead and the Solent flank the naval town of Gosport.
The railway station and for a period served Portsmouth. Queen Victoria used to come here on her way to the Isle of Wight on a special line that ran from Gosport to the former Royal Railway Station which now lies Clarence Victualing Yard and belongs to the Navy.
Church of the Holy Trinity, originally a 17th century church but mainly rebuilt in the 19th century, and the organ once belonged to the Duke of Chandos and on which Handel is said to have composed some of his music.
