This little village facing Firle Beacon rising to 718ft is famous for its blackfaced Southdown sheep, in 1778 by John Ellman who started a breeding programme.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an impressive cruciform Norman building with several additions up to the 15th century. The interior has 18th century pulpit and box-pews, some fine Netherland stained glass.
