North of Loch Riddon in a beautiful glen from the head of Loch Riddeon an inlet of the Kyles of Bute crossed by the Ruel and into the hills.
In the little church of Kilmodan is a memorial to Colin Maclauren the mathematician who organised Edinburgh’s defences during the up rising in 1745.
Glendaruel: (gleann, glen) ruadhail means red. The red probably refers to the colour of the soil, but the more romantic would prefer that the red refers to a battle in the 11th century, when Scandanavian invaders were defeated and the river ran red with their blood
