URPoint Details
Running inland from Loch Leven, an arm of Loch Linnhe, about a 1 mile from Ballachulish one of the most desolate and wild of Scottish glens, crosses by the Croe, has to be one of the most visited places in Scotland famous for its beauty and magnificent views.
Over the glen hangs the tragic memory of the Massacre of Glencoe. Clan chiefs were required to swear allegiance to William III before the end of December 1691.
Unfortunately, Macdonald of Glencoe was late in signing and early in February 120 Campbell troopers under Campbell of Glenlyon visited supposedly for friendship. They fell on their sleeping hosts, either slaughtering them all or turning them out into the snow and burned houses to the ground.
The scene of the Massacre is inscribed by a monument and near Signal Rock is from where the sign for the Massacre was given.
