Gladstone's Land is a most important example of a 17th century high-tenement building in the overcrowded Old Town which grew up along the ridge, between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse - the Royal Mile.
Cramped conditions of the Old Town determined its width on which a house was built, which meant that extension was only possible in depth or upwards.
Completed in 1620, the six-storey building contains remarkable painted ceilings and was originally the home of the Edinburgh burgess, Thomas Gledstanes.
