A small stone tenement built around 1760, to accommodate four pitmen's families is where George Stephenson, the railway pioneer was born in 1781. He died in 1848.

The furnishings reflect the age of George Stephenson's birth here in 1781: the room in which he was born is open to visitors.

A relief of the locomotive ‘Rocket’ was placed in the cottage in 1929.
