George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys of Wem was born on 15 May 1648 at Acton Hall near Wrexham.  He became Lord Chief Justice in 1682. He conducted the 'Bloody Assizes' trials at Monmouth's followers. He died of kidney disease in the Tower of London on 18 April 1689.
