Disabled access to house from car park disabled passengers may be set down at front door. House: steps at front door ramp. Garden: accessible, approach along gravel drive some steps and gradients. Toilets in cobbled courtyard. Tearoom not wheelchair accessible.
The house was built in 1600-05, and restored by Sir Charles Barry in the 1850s Barry's designs have been re-created in the principal rooms.
Gawthorpe was the home of the Shuttleworth family, and the Rachel-Kay Shuttleworth textile collections are on display in the house.
A recently restored 17th century estate building houses a broad programme of art, craft and management courses.
