In the Domesday Book the village was known as Gerolfestuna. The village takes its name from the river Yare, which winds through the parish and was originally known as the Gar or Ger.
St Margaret’s parish church has a fine tower, built in the late 14th century or early 15th century. The main body of the church dates from the first half of the 14th century, although the south aisle and nave windows are from Tudor period.
