The name Gavelwode appears in 1250, and probably deriving from the Saxon ‘gavol’, or rent, paid for the woods around the settlement.
A village with a claim to horse racing when in the 18th century a racecourse was made encircling the village church.
There are some beautiful houses dating back to the 16th century. Well Lane, with its attractive houses had three wells which supplied water to the village. Goat Hall and Wild Wood Cottage are both 16th century.
