URPoint Details
The unusual and interesting St Nicholas's Church is Norman and is built of rubble and clunch. The south and north aisles were added in the 13th century.
The interior has a 14th century sedilia, stepped in three bays set into the wall on the south side of the sanctuary, surmounted by three balls, symbols of St Nicholas, patron saint of pawnbrokers.
Buried under the organ is the headless body of Henry, Lord Scrope of Marsham whose family were patrons of the church in the 12th century. It is said that King Henry V had him beheaded at Porchester Castle for being a traitor. He was later pardoned and his body returned to Fyfield.
