The focal point of this attractive village is the group of 50 almshouses built around a peaceful courtyard in 1694. They were originally endowed in 1694 by Sarah, Duchess Dowager of Somerset as a refuge for 20 widows of clergymen and 30 widows of laytmen.

On moonlit nights, thew Hounds of Hell can be seen pursuing the ghost of Wild Darrell across the fields around the village. The story the locals tell is that in the 16th century the owner of Littlecote House, who murdered a new born baby by throwing it on to a blazing fire. Darrell escaped justice through the intervention of powerful friends, but later broke his neck when jumping over a stile.
