The village has associations with every church in County Durham, from its quarries comes Frosterley Marble which polishes into a beautiful black marble ingrained with small white fossil circles. The marble has been used for centuries for fonts, tombs and pillars in churches and cathedrals all over the world.
There is an excellent example in St Michaels church built in 1866.
