This charming seaside resort town and harbour was created by Alexander Fraser, 7th Laird of Philorth in the 16th century.
The castle on Kinnaird Head was started by his grandson in 1569. Only the central tower remains and it was adapted in 1787 to a lighthouse now know as Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, originally used to aid the herring fleet back to port.

The Wine Tower is 15th century and is built over a large 100ft cave and has no entrance to the lower storey except through an opening in the upper floor.
In Saltoun Square is the Town Cross and the Town Hall complete with a statue of the 16th century Lord Saltoun.
