URPoint Details
This railway bridge is a famous landmark built between 1882 and 1890 on a cantilever system designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker at a cost of £3,250,000.
It stands 450ft high and more than a mile long and takes 35 men and 3½ to paint and when they are finished its time to start all over again.
From shore to shore the only ‘foothold’ is the tiny islet of Inchgarvie which supports the central pier.
The railway runs 150ft above water level with a lattice of great girders overhead.
