The fort was built after the 1715 Jacobite Rising and named after Augustus, Duke of Cumberland.
In January 1745, the fort was captured by Bonnie Prince Charlie's forces and who held it until after the Battle of Culloden.
General Wade General Wade enlarged it in 1730. and linked the town with Speyside by a 22 mile Military Road, climbing over the Corrieyairack Pass. The road completed in 1731 descends into the Spey Valley in steep zigzags.
Bonnie Prince Charlie took this road in 1745 with his Highland army. It is now a glorious walking track with spectacular scenery.
