An ancient town on the River Findhorn near the point where it enters Findhorn bay.

King Duncan held his court here in the 11th century and is mentioned in Shakespeare’s

Macbeth.

The 23ft carved Sueno Stone just outside town is thought to commemorate the victory of the King of Denmark’s son Sueno over Duncan’s the grandfather Malcolm II in 1108.

Darnaway Castle south of Forres was built in 1810 and incorporates a 15th century hall where supposedly Mary, Queen of Scots held her court in 1564.

Culbin Sands engulfed in 1694 the estate of Culbin, has been reforested by the Forestry Commission.
