The Marchioness of Waterford had the village rebuilt after her husband who died after a horse-riding accident. A tall column of polished Aberdeen granite carrying the figure of an angel also commemorates the Marquis of Waterford.
The ‘Friendly Hound’ on the Common is a small country pub, a mile from the village.
Ford Castle was largely restored between 1861 and 1865 by Lady Waterford and is a fine example of a 13th century square-built fortress with towers at each corner. Three of the original towers remain.
James IV of Scotland spent the night here before his defeat and death at the hands of the English on Flodden Field in 1513.
The Church of St Michael dates from the early 13th century and has its original bell-tower.
