The old town with its narrow cobbled streets is always busy as thousands of passengers each year catch steamers and cross-channel ferries heading to the continent.
The parish church of St Mary and St Eanswythe dates from 1135, and rebuilt in 1216. A window in the church commemorates William Harvey who was born here in 1578 and it was who discovered how the blood circulates.
1850 and destroyed in an air raid in 1942. The tower was restored as a memorial. There are fine views from the top.
