The village overlooks the marshes, with Basildon to the north and the river Thames to the south, at the head of a tributary of Hole Haven Creek.
The church tower can be seen from many vantage points around the area.
One Tree Hill is a local beauty spot and is the highest point (in a direct line) before the North Pole, with Westley Heights being on the same ridge of hills overlooking the river Thames.
