Florence Nightingale was born on 12 May 1820 in Florence, Grand Duchy of Tuscany. She was a celebrated nurse and writer, and became highly regarded for her pioneering work in nursing through the Crimean War where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night. The family moved back to England in 1821, with Nightingale being brought up in the family's homes at Embley, Hampshire and Lea Hurst, Derbyshire.
She died on 13 August 1910 (aged 90) peacefully in her sleep in her room at 10 South Street, Park Lane, London.
