Begun in 1277, Flint was the easternmost and the earliest in date of the chain of magnificent castles that Edward I erected along the coast of North Wales.
Flint's most distinctive feature is its great moated circular keep, guarding a harbour on the Dee and lapped at high tide by the sea.
The ground-plan is a simple square with thick double walls and a drumtower at each corner, but the tower at the south corner is actually outside the main entrance and was formerly connected with the rest of the castle by a drawbridge.
