URPoint Details
Another interesting town in this corner of Wales with a most interesting tale to tell.
It was here in 1797 that Jemima Nicholas saved Wales from being taken over by France in an invasion. She captured 12 Frenchman single handed, armed only with a pitchfork on the 21st February 1797.
A pillar at Carreg Gwastad Point near Llanwnda and 3 miles from Goodwick commemorates the event.
In the past herring fishing and pilchard curing were Fishguard's main industries: a new harbour was built in 1906 so was a breakwater out to sea, both in the expectation that the new liners would make Fishguard their first port of call.
Unfortunately with the outbreak of World War I these dreams were never fulfilled.
