One of the Lake District National Park's smallest villages nestles in low wooded hills in beautiful scenery with typical Lakeland farmhouses and cottages some with white-washed walls.
The church built between the 18th and 19th century has a squat steeple, and a timber-framed porch.
On Finsthwaite Heights there is a tower commemorating officers, seamen and marines of the Royal Navy whose matchless conduct and irresistible valour defeated the fleets of France and promoted and protected liberty and commerce in 1799.
