URPoint Details
The church of St. Mary, on a beautiful downland site, was built in 1866 to Street's designs and is a rather stark building, somewhat 13th century in style with an eastern apse and a pyramid-topped tower. Marble is extensively used in the pulpit and screen and there is beautiful stained glass work by William Morris.
The church owes its building to the father of Major Wroughton who was killed in 1917 in Palestine and is remembered by a granite cross on the Downs.
