URPoint Details
The 11th century church of St Michaels & All Angels is well worth straying from the route to see as it is the smallest church in the country and sits on a grassy knoll. New windows were inserted in the 12th and 13th centuries and the low tower was built inside the nave in the 15th. The south doorway is a magnificent example of Early English craftsmanship, where an almost orange local ironstone alternates with a grey limestone to give a delightful polychrome effect. One 14th century window has an elegant curved ogee arch and there are attractive carved corbels around other windows. The interior is simple and peaceful; there is a plain Norman font with a pretty 17th century cover, more carvings and good mid-19th century oak furnishings.
