Farnborough - Hampshire

Farnborough

URPoint Details

In 1905 His Majesty's Balloon Factory (later the Royal Aircraft Factory) was set up with Texan Samuel Cody to experiment with man-lifting kites - strange contraptions including baskets made at nearby Crondall. Cody became Chief Kiting Instructor and in 1908 he and a Native American Indian friend made the first recorded powered flight in Britain.

Church of St Peter is unusual as it has a 12th century painting depicting three saints Agnes, Mary Magdalene and Eugenia. The church has a Norman nave and quaint 17th century weather-board tower.

The Ship Inn, 162 Ship Lane GU14 8BE

Several centuries old, this inn was formerly called the Royal George, but the name was changed after the sinking at Spithead of the famous warship of that name with the loss of Admiral Kempenfelt and 800 men.
