URPoint Details
A set of waterfalls on the River Lochy, the Falls of Lochy are located 2½ miles (4 km) northwest of Killin. The falls are popular with canoeists. There is a power station here which forms part of the Breadalbane Hydro-Electric Power Scheme. A Borland fish lift was installed to provide access for salmon to the previously-inaccessible upper reaches of the river as compensation for spawning grounds on the nearby River Lyon which were lost when it was dammed. The lift acts much like a lock on a canal; fish are attracted into a lower pool by a stream of water, a lower gate is then closed at regular intervals and the water level raised until the fish can swim out at the upper level.
