Eyre Chapel - Newbold

Newbold Rd, Newbold S41 8RJ, England

URPoint Details

One of Chesterfield's most mysterious buildings lies 1ᄑ miles outside the town centre in Newbold Village.
Here, in a grassy corner, you will find a single storey stone building - Eyre Chapel. So wha's the mystery? Look closely at the windows.
Architects call them Perpendicular - dating from the 13th to 16th centuries.
But what about the little doorway, just 5 feet and 3 inches high with a round arch? That's Norman dating from the 11th century. To try and solve the mystery, turn to the Domesday Book of 1086.
Newbold appears as a Royal Manor - with Chesterfield just one of the berewicks! Could the Chapel have survived from that 'new building' which gave the Manor its name - Newbold.

While Chesterfield became a manor in its own right, land at Newbold was granted to Welbeck Abbey. It seems that the canons of Welbeck adapted an earlier building on their Newbold estate to serve as a chapel.
Newbold was bought by the Eyre family, who left the Chapel its name, later in life it served as a cow shed and a barn, before being left derelict.
