URPoint Details
Begun in 1115 by William de Londres and given in 1141 as a cell to the Benedictine Abbey of Gloucester and is the best example of a fortified monastery in Britain.
The church and part of the precinct walls remain and the latter with their five towers and two gateways enclose an area of five acres.
The church is pure Norman in style and forms part of the defence and has a dark but impressive interior.
The barrel vaulted choir is divided from the nave by an old oak screen, is crenellated with a fine nave and some ancient tombs.
