Evesham

Evesham , England

URPoint Details

At the centre of the Vale, Evesham still retains its traditional atmosphere of a bustling and ancient market on a bend of the River Avon. For this is the centre of the Vale's crop of fruit and market garden produce.

Nice any time of year, this is really a place to visit in the Spring when the sight of the fruit blossom, particularly down the back roads towards Pershore, can be staggeringly beautiful, followed by pick your own fruit and vegetables from June to October.

The River Avon is a favourite amongst fishermen - especially the young ones and the physically handicapped who have a particular stretch at Evesham specially reserved for their use.

The magnificent Bell Tower is part of what now remains of the abbey.

In the Middle Ages, Evesham was a popular place of pilgrimage because Simon de Montfort was buried beneath the Abbey High Altar.

The town saw the end of the Baron's war, for it was here, on Greenhill, north of the town, that his army was cornered and butchered. An obelisk on the hill, the Leicester Tower, now commemorates the battle site.

In the market place stands the Round House, a 15th century timbered building and the Town Hall dating from 1586.
