The road winds down into the pretty village where the Church of St John the Baptist, built in the 12th Century, and is situated on the rise. Handel is alleged to have stopped his coach to listen to the chiming of its six bells. On Palm Sunday donkeys are seen in the walk of enactment.
The church overlooks the Green Man, a lovely pub which was once the site of the poor house and stocks.
The picturesque recreation ground below, with an outdoor swimming pool, bowling green and cricket pitch, was donated by the Duke of Bedford, and has been a wonderful setting for generations of village cricket teams.
Village life was not always idyllic, Linda Saunders, a girl of 19, was shipped to Australia in 1829, her clothing supplied by the parish, and Thomas Pasey was sentenced to life in 1834 for stealing and killing a lamb.
