Situated on the Ettrick Water and in the Ettrick Forest a former royal hunting ground where the old bridge was washed away in 1777 but a stone bearing the Harden coat of arms has been built into the present bridge. To the northwest over the hills to Yarrow you pass by the 16th century tower of Kirkhope once the home of the Hardens.
Near the river and in a beautiful setting is Oakwood Tower the home of Scott's grandfather and built by Robert Scott in 1602. Nearby are the remains of a Roman fort of Oakwood.
According to Sir Walter Scott, Oakwood Tower was the home of his namesake Michael Scott, the 'wondrous wizard'.
