URPoint Details
This endearing church of St George, (Churches Conservation Trust) a jumble of sandstone and brick roofed in stone and clay tiles with a timber bell-cote, owes its unrestored survival to the building of nearby Christ Church in 1853. It is basically a Tudor structure dating from about 1540, with additions between 1724 and 1842. In 1725 the south transept was added to house a remarkable family pew to Vanburgh’s design for the Duke of Newcastle. Fine 18th century furnishings include the three-decker pulpit and reredos and there are some notable monuments.
