URPoint Details

The Church built in the 7th or 8th century AD when the area was part of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria, and is regarded as "England's earliest complete church". The building includes long-and-short quoins  characteristic of , and re-used Roman masonry from Binchester Roman Fort. Built around 675AD, it ranks as England's earliest most complete church. Much of the stonework is Roman, shown by the diamond brooching and the chancel arch. The circular churchyard, high splayed windows and sundial are features of its Celtic inspiration.
