A busy market town dating from the 13th century and once an important coaching centre.

Many old inns still survive, and to the north the famous forest (haunt of Dick Turpin) covers 6,000 acres.

Wood House, home now to Rod Stewart was once lived in by Sir Winston Churchill.

Copped Hall, ruins stand in the estate about 1 mile out of the village and has not been replaced since it was burnt down in 1917. This beautiful historic building can boast that Henry VIII, Mary Tudor and Queen Elizabeth I all stayed here.

Hill Hall, to the east is another delightful old house and is described as one of the most important Elizabethan mansions in England with its unique 16th century wall paintings.

Market days are wonderful to visit and you can buy most anything. In 1833 a man sold his wife for 2/6d and got himself drunk on the proceeds.

Epping is the highest point in Essex. The forest is about 7 miles long and with 6,000 acres separates the village from London. Epping Forest has inspired many artists, photographers and painters from all over the world.
