On Newbury\'s South-west side, Enborne parish has no single centre. It consists of a number of settlements spread through a wooded parish. Ancient Enborne Street crosses it and also of historic interest is Biggs Cottage which was the headquarters of the Earl of Essex who led the Parliamentary troops at the first Battle of Newbury in 1643.
On Bell Hill is Peregrine Cottage which was once an inn popular with travellers and sheep and cattle drovers. Much modern housing has been built near Enborne Street and at Enborne Row. Enborne Lodge of the l7th century, is now a special school of the Inner London Education Authority. The church has Norman and l4th century work as well as a very old bell known as Michael and said to be one of the oldest in the country. Within the church is a l4th century wall painting of the Annunciation.
