The Abbey was founded by Ethelreda in 673 and completed in 1189. Hereward the Wake defended it against William the Conqueror in 1071. William appointed Simeon, another Norman, to be Abbot of Ely.
The Lady Chapel is breathtakingly beautiful. The 248ft nave is one of the longest in England, and the ceiling is 72ft high. The Cathedral is a magnificent building and dominates the surrounding countryside is a spectacular sight when lit up at night. The unique octagonal lantern tower is impressive.
Buildings of the cathedral include The Dark Cloister, Powcher's Hall, the Painted Chamber (Walsingham House), the Chapel of the Infirmary (Deanery), the Black Hostelry & Cellarers Chamber and Cellarers House (Boarding House of King's School) form a group.
Powcher's Hall was built in the 14th century was known as the Blood Letting House is now a Canon's residence.
Black Hostelry used in the 13th century for accommodating visiting monks is now a Canon's residence.
Chapel of the Infirmary or Walpole`s Gate is a 12th century building and now home to the Dean of Ely.
